Rolls-Royce selling more efficient engines
Ships are buying more efficient engines because of soaring fuel costs and concern over polluting emissions, according to Rolls-Royce. The British engine manufacturer said its marine division had seen a significant jump in sales as more ship operators had adopted alternative propulsion systems, the Times reported. Chief Executive Sir John Rose said the rising cost of fuel and environmental pressure to cut emissions had pushed ship owners to step up efforts to overhaul their fleets. An estimated 3,000 ships that will be built in the next decade will be equipped with propulsion systems developed by companies such as Rolls-Royce, the report said.
Rolls-Royce is using new technology used in power stations and the aerospace industry to build a new generation of ship engines. Its Bergen engine for tugs and ferries was developed from a unit used in power stations while the MT30 engine for larger ships, including supertankers, is based on the Trent engine used on commercial planes.
The Bergen engine, for instance, uses liquefied natural gas instead of conventional diesel, and emits 20% less carbon dioxide and 90% less nitrogen oxide.
Efficient Engines A Hit With Ship Operators
Rising cost of fuel and environmental pressure to cut emissions has pushed ship-owners to step up efforts to overhaul their fleets, Chief Executive of Rolls Royce, Sir John Rose has said. He also said that its marine division had seen a significant jump in sales as more ship operators have adopted alternative propulsion systems. Used for tugs and ferries, the Bergen engine by Rolls Royce uses Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) instead of conventional diesel, and emits 20% less carbon dioxide and 90% less nitrogen oxide. It was developed from a unit used in power stations while the MT30 engine for larger ships, including super tankers, is based on the Trent engine used on commercial planes.
