Nippon Yusen Focuses On Reducing Fuel Usage, Pollution
With the objective of reducing fuel usage and pollution, Nippon Yusen K.K., Japan's largest shipping line will spend USD 638 million on new engines, solar panels and other technologies for its vessels. With this, carbon-dioxide emissions would be reduced by at least 10% per ton-mile by 2013, the company announced. To reduce fuel consumption, the plan intends to create an “air cavity” between ship hulls and the ocean. The company is also looking into the possibility of using wind, hydrogen and solar cells in place of oil on all new vessels by 2050. Nippon will also spend half of the JPY 70 billion on fitting less-polluting engines. Besides this, it plans to add solar panels to all car-carrier by December.
