Marshalls Passes 40M GT Mark

INTERNATIONAL Registries, Inc. (IRI), the Maritime and Corporate Administrator of the Marshall Islands says the country's fleet has passed the 40m gt mark.
IRI says that, in less than five years, the Marshall Islands Registry has more than doubled its fleet size from 18.5 million gross tons and 626 vessels at the end of 2003 to 40 million gross tons and 1736 vessels in May 2008 reflecting an average growth rate of 18%.

"Fundamental to the growth and quality of the Registry has been our decentralised approach which enables our regional offices to locally interact with clients around the world. My partners, Mr. Tony Guida and Mr. Clay Maitland, and I, are proud of the work being done through our regional offices which are headed up by Mr. John Ramage in the UK, Annie Ng in the Far East, Mr. Theo Xenakoudis in Greece and Mr. Michael Wyler in Switzerland," said Mr. Bill Gallagher, President of IRI.

The registry says it will be opening two new offices in June 2008, one in Geneva, Switzerland and one in Baltimore, Maryland. Additional technical and marine safety personnel have also been added in regional areas in Asia, Europe and the US to be able to respond more quickly to technical and marine safety issues that arise. This includes responding to technical issues in local time zones and scheduling inspections from a local office.
