Xilas Acquires Newbuilding Contracts For $51.3 Million

As reported, Greek shipowner Ioannis Xilas concluded the acquisition of a duo of newbuilding contracts from Danish group Clipper. Both vessels are currently being built by Tsuji Heavy Industries at its Jiangsu Shipyard in China. They are trader-type vessels, each with a carrying capacity of 30,000-dwt.

According to the resale contract deal, Xilas Group is expected to take delivery  of the vessels during 2009-2010. Clipper Upon has ordered a total of 24 ships, which will be transferred to a shipping pool, under the name Clipeer Trader Pool, together with the existing 12 vessels that the group controls. This pool will be managed by Clipper. Xilas Group has concluded in its decades of history a total of 60 newbuildings, having built a strong relationship with Clipper dating back into the '80s. French bank Natixis, along with XRTC, a Hellenic shipping consulting company and representatives of Natixis in the Greek market, financed the deal of Xilas Group, which amounted to about $51.3 million.

Earlier this year, Xilas Group took delivery of one of the three cement bulk carriers it has on order at the Yardimci Shipyards of Turkey. The 10,000-dwt vessel entered into a time-charter contract for a period of 20 years with Aget Heracles, the Hellenic branch of French Lafarge Group, global leader in the aggregates sector. The remaining two vessels shall have a smaller capacity of 6,600-dwt and are as well chartered to Lafarge. The investment in these three vessels cost Xilas Group the total amount of 49 million euros.
