IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea -2008

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) announced the decision of the Panel of Judges for the Organizations 2008 Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea.

According to this decision, which was endorsed by the IMO Council, the Award for 2008 is bestowed on Rodolfo Fonseca da Silva Rigueira of Brazil, for his display of exceptional bravery in the rescue of six crew members from a dangerous fire on the drill ship Noble Roger Eason, at considerable risk to his own safety.

Besides the winner of the award, the IMO Council decided that certificates in recognition of meritorious services rendered will also be awarded to another six candidates. Letters of commendation will be sent to other candidates, including the crews of the Hellenic Coast Guard vessel SAR516 and the tug boat Alfeios, the staff of the Port Authority of Katakolo and of the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Piraeus, all nominated by the Government of Greece.

The Council expressed appreciation to all 32 candidates and to those Governments and organizations, including HELMEPA, which had nominated candidates for the Award.
