Kristen Navigation Crowned Champions At 1st Posidonia Shipsoccer Tournament

A football team from Brazil, an English referee, a famous Greek stadium and a very special international crowd were the main highlights of yesterday's inaugural five-a-side Posidonia Shipsoccer Tournament, a social and networking sporting event which brought together 16 teams from as many Posidonia 2008 participants.
Styled on the platform of other similar shipping soccer events, such as the UK's Baltic Exchange tournament or Brazil's annual event hosted at the legendary Maracana Stadium, the 1st Posidonia Shipsoccer Tournament held yesterday at Karaiskakis Stadium, is the brainchild of Filathlitiki Athlitiki Enosi (F.N.E.) and Posidonia Exhibitions . "The idea we tabled a few years back as we had identified the need to introduce a fun element into the busy Posidonia Exhibition schedule," said Mr. George Gabriel of Golden Union, who kept a few clean sheets on F.N.E.'s path to second place following a 1-0 defeat to Kristen Navigation in the tournament's final.
"It was a highly successful event which promoted team spirit and brought together many people from the global maritime community on the spectacular Karaiskakis stadium," said Mr. Gabriel, a long-standing Olympiakos fan. Lloyd's Register right winger Mr. Nick Brown was also appreciative of the occasion: "It's great to be taking part and seeing Posidonia expanding its range. It's always good to see more non-conventional ways to celebrate Posidonia and this is certainly the right platform to bring together shipping industry professionals in a relaxing and networking environment."
While Kristen Navigation outplayed any opposition on its way to football fame, all eyes were fixed on the two Brazilian players of tug boat specialists Camorim Rebocadores, perennial champions of Brazil's shipsoccer tournament held every December in Rio De Janeiro. "This is our first time in Greece and this beautiful stadium. It's a great occasion for all those who like football and earn their livelihoods from shipping. In Brazil, football is passion and it's great to see that Greeks are also passionate about the sport," said 37-year-old Flamengo fan Mr. Marcio Machado, Operations Manager of the company whose team has won the last three shipsoccer tournaments in Brazil.
Teams were divided into four groups and fought out a round robin system with the top team from each group advancing to the semi-finals stage. The venue was carved into four five-a-side pitches, where matches were played concurrently.
Refereeing standards were high throughout the tournament not least thanks to the whistle of Mr. James Drury of Seatrade, a seasoned, semi-professional English regional divisions ref. "It's a great event and we are thoroughly enjoying every minute of it – the organisation is fantastic, the football is of high caliber and the venue is just outstanding," said Mr. Drury on the half time of the big derby of the group stage between Lloyd's Register and DNV that ended to a one all draw.
The event's gold sponsor was Deloitte, while the sponsor's list included the silver sponsors GAC, Inchcape Shipping Services and the Royal Bank of Scotland, as well as the bronze sponsors OSG, Marichem Marigases, Atlantic Shipping Services and Wilhelmsen Ships Services.
